5 Things Your Insurance Adjuster Won't Tell You After a Total Loss

Insurance adjusters are trained to settle claims fast. Here are five things they're betting you don't know — and what you can do about each one.

5 Things Your Insurance Adjuster Won't Tell You After a Total Loss

Insurance adjusters are professionals. They're also employees of the company that profits when your claim is paid out as little as possible. Here's what they're counting on you not knowing.

1. The First Offer Is Negotiable

Always. No exceptions. The initial valuation is generated by software and optimized to close claims fast. Adjusters are trained to present it as final. It never is. Ask questions. Push back. Get documentation on every comparable vehicle they used.

2. You Can Reject Their Comparable Vehicles

The insurer's valuation is based on "comparable" vehicles. You have the right to request the full list and challenge every one that doesn't truly match yours — wrong trim, wrong mileage, wrong geographic market. Remove enough bad comparables and their number falls apart.

3. Your Aftermarket Upgrades Have Real Value

New wheels, a premium sound system, a lift kit, upgraded tires — these add real, documentable value to your vehicle. Automated systems routinely ignore or heavily discount aftermarket improvements. An independent appraiser knows how to include them properly.

4. Condition Adjustments Can Be Disputed

Insurers apply condition adjustments that often assume average wear and tear regardless of your vehicle's actual state. If your car was well-maintained — service records, recent tires, no prior damage — those adjustments should reflect it. An independent appraisal documents reality, not assumptions.

5. You Have the Right to an Independent Appraisal

This is the big one. Your policy almost certainly includes an appraisal clause that gives you the right to hire an independent appraiser to challenge their valuation. This is a contractual right — not a favor they're granting you. Use it.

RIZQ provides independent vehicle appraisals for total loss disputes. We know the process. We know what adjusters rely on — and how to dismantle it with real data.
